New Year, New Puppy or Kitten?
Here are a few tips for bringing a new puppy or kitten into your New Year!
Get on the right paw by starting off with a high quality diet. The ingredient list should have a primary meat source in the first 2-4 ingredients instead of a grain source. Avoid meat by-products, corn and wheat.
Keep on monthly heartworm prevention year round, which also treats intestinal parasites, which are zoonotic, or transmittable to humans.
Keep on monthly flea and tick prevention year round.
Vaccinate every 3-4 weeks until 16-18 weeks old and then annually for the prevention of transmittable diseases.
Puppy Behavior Checklist

Avoid paper or puppy pads and encourage puppy to eliminate outside as often as possible.
Always take puppy outside on leash and collar.
Ideally, puppy should sleep and eat in crate to make it a positive experience.
Do not let puppy out of crate when whining, barking or crying. Always wait until puppy is quiet to encourage appropriate behavior.
Expect house training to take 8-12 months.
Socialize to any and all experiences that the puppy may experience in a lifetime!
Begin obedience/puppy training classes as soon as possible to socialize and teach appropriate behavior.
Kitten Behavior Checklist
Proper litter care is critical to prevent problem litter box behavior in the future.
Use unscented, clumping sand litter.
There should be one litter pan per cat, PLUS ONE.
Scoop the litter pan DAILY and dump weekly.
Play should include chasing toys, lights and teaching tricks like fetch. (Avoid encouraging biting, wrestling or chasing fingers and toes.)
Appropriate toys include cat balls, laser lights, catnip toys, remote control cat toys and toys intended for use in cats.
Socialize to any and all experiences that the kitten may experience during a lifetime!
